CAMDEN REMEMBERS WORLD WAR TWO
At present we are concentrating on completing the World War Two Roll of Honour, a list of all the soldiers who died with a Memorial Scroll for each.

View the World War Two Nominal Roll, when complete it will contain more information and hopefully a photograph of all the men and women who volunteered and served.

World War Two commenced on 3 September 1939 and ended in Europe on 8 May 1945 (VE Day), and in the Pacific on 14 August 1945 (VP Day), the AIF was disbanded on 30 June 1947.

There were thousands of servicemen who passed through the Camden area between 1939 and 1946 at the various defence facilities. Many of those who enlisted in the Camden district probably had little to do with the area except for the fact that they came here to enlist and most likely had their initial training for the Army and Air force at one of the training establishments. That they were here is ample reason to honour them on Camden Remembers.

The major military establishments were the Narellan Military Camp on the Northern Road at Narellan, and the Eastern Command Training School at Studley Park, Narellan. Many army units also undertook manoeuvres throughout the area and there were temporary encampments in a number of other locations including Camden Showground, Smeaton Grange and Menangle Paceway.

The principal RAAF establishment was located at Camden aerodrome, with secondary airfields at The Oaks and Menangle Paceway. As well, there were a number of emergency runways constructed throughout the local area. The RAF also had a number of squadrons based at Camden airfield between 1944 and 1946.

Camden War Cemetery, located in the Camden General Cemetery contains twenty three burials comprising four Australian Army, two Royal Air Force and seventeen Royal Australian Air Force personnel. Most of those buried here died in three separate air training accidents.

The database is still being compiled and more names will be added as we process the information. If you have information or would like to include someone here please contact us.
