Killed in Action Cemetery or Memorial: Villers Bretonneux, France Father: James TOOVEY (9 August 1867 - 16 December 1942) Mother: Florence Louisa KARKOE (1870 - 18 November 1942) Frederick gave his occupation as Miner when he enlisted 23 May 1915 at Liverpool and served in the 19th Battalion A.I.F. His next of kin was his father James Toovey of Toonalli Farm, Upper Burragorang. He departed Sydney on the 'Kanowna' 19 June 1915 and arrived Gallipoli August 1915 and later in France via Egypt March 1916. Frederick was cousin to Ernest George Grimston (Lance Sergeant 1911DCM) who died of wounds 24 October 1918 France aged 22. Another cousin Joseph Hyram KARKOE (Private 6034) served in the 4th Battalion A.I.F. in France and returned to Australia on the 'Norman' 20 August 1919. Lance Sergeant Frederick George TOOVEY was reported wounded and missing in action 14 November 1916 in France. It was nine months later that he was confirmed killed in action at The Somme France 14 November 1916 age 22. |
