William gave his occupation as Farmer when he enlisted 3 November 1915 at Holsworthy and his next of kin his father Joseph Owen Ellis of 8 Oxford Street, Rozelle and later Cross Street, Forest Lodge.

William served in the 18th Battalion A.I.F. He departed Sydney on the 'Aeneas' 20 December 1915 and arrived in France via England September 1916. He was wounded in action 8 August 1918 France.

His brother (Private 1479) Reginald James Ellis was killed in action in France in 1917.

Private William Henry ELLIS was killed in action in France 31 August 1918 age 21.
